Power nutrition for a power sport. Jumping horses require enormous performances from their muscles. The enormous power the horses must generate from the hindquarters and the constricted turns that are executed in the arena, require extreme elasticity. The bones and tendons of the horse suffer enormous strain on their forelegs during landing, as much as several times the bodyweight of the horse. The quickness of response of the horse (eyes nerves muscle cells) must be extremely high. Everything is timing, suppleness and the extremely quick availability of a great amount of energy. And of course the muscles must stay supple, may not acidify and must recover quickly.
Jumping horses require jumping power! The strenuous physical exertion of a jumping horse requires special energy sources, and it is clear that a sprinter needs different nutrition than a marathon runner. Carbohydrates (starches and sugars) are the vital energy sources that are most suitable for short-term energy-exhausting performances. Carbohydrates can be found in many grain varieties. Jumpers know this and that is why they feed their horses lots of grains and grain mixes. (see chart 1)
The unbalanced calcium-phosphor ratio and the lack of important vitamins and minerals in grains are a big disadvantage for the sport horse. Feeding a well balanced, specially developed daily ration in addition to grains is a must for the sport horse. That is why Pavo developed the Pavo JumpingMenu. It will bring out the best in your horse!
